All Park Roads Closed Due to Hazardous Conditions

Great Smoky Mountains National Park roads closed due to winter weather and hazardous conditions. The National Park Service is reporting that all park roads are closed due to the winter weather making roads hazardous. Mt. LeConte so far has had 17″ of snow and its still snowing. Newfound Gap has had 10″ of snow, lower elevations have had almost 6″. The heavy wet snow is causing trees limbs to break and trees to come down because leaves still on the trees are heavy with snow. US 44/Newfound Gap Road Now Open Through Great Smoky Mountains

Us 441 also called Newfound Gap Road from Gatlinburg, TN to Cherokee is open now but the Park Service advises drivers to watch for patches of snow and ice still on the road in some places. Road Repair Starts Soon on Newfound Gap Road in Great Smoky Mountains National Park

Work to stabilize Newfound Gap Road through the Great Smoky Mountains National Park begins January 5, 2014 and will last about four months. The project is to rebuild part of the road and add a retaining wall. Traffic lanes will be shifted and drivers should pay close attention to the new traffic patterns when driving in the work zone. Travelers should expect temporary lane closures from time to time. Newfound Gap Road is a popular and busy roadway in the Great Smoky Mountains.
