All Park Roads Closed Due to Hazardous Conditions

Great Smoky Mountains National Park roads closed due to winter weather and hazardous conditions. The National Park Service is reporting that all park roads are closed due to the winter weather making roads hazardous. Mt. LeConte so far has had 17″ of snow and its still snowing. Newfound Gap has had 10″ of snow, lower elevations have had almost 6″. The heavy wet snow is causing trees limbs to break and trees to come down because leaves still on the trees are heavy with snow. Most Roads Open But Watch for Snow and Ice Patches in the Great Smoky Mountains Area

Most roads in and around the Great Smoky Mountains are open but if driving please watch for snow and ice patches still on the roads in certain areas. Some areas that do not get sunlight are still iced over and can cause hazardous driving conditions still. Pay attention, slow down and remain cautious. One more day of frigid temperatures before temperatures return to the 50’s. Stay safe and stay warm!

Great Smoky Mountains Fall Foliage 2013 Report Update

The  Great Smoky Mountains fall foliage 2013 show is happening now. At the 5,000 ft elevation and higher the fall foliage colors are peaking. During the next 2 weeks the color show will spread down to the lower elevations. Peak colors are expected the weekend of October 18-20 in the GSM. By late October peak will be over in the highest elevations with color still in the lower elevations but past peak.
