Earthquake In The Great Smoky Mountains!

An Earthquake Rumbles in the Great Smoky Mountains National Park A rare earthquake occurred in the Great Smoky Mountains on Wednesday Feb. 25, 2015 just a few minutes after  4:00am. The earthquake was a 2.1 magnitude and was felt in an area near Clingmans Dome  located about 7 miles south of Gatlinburg, TN.   Only two other earthquakes have occurred in the park, all minor. One was in 1979 at 3.2 magnatude and one in 2011 at 2.5 magnitude. Minor earthquakes like these cause no damage but can be felt. It has been a winter to remember for the park….

Bear Safety Urged by US Forest Service

Bear safety tips. It’s spring time and the bears are on the prowl looking for food. It is a known fact bears like to seek food in campgrounds going through trash cans or even tents and cars looking for food. If you life in a bear prone area never leave trash and garbage just lying around, the smell of the food can attract bears. Great Smoky Mountains National Park Winter Hours Announced by Park Service

Now that colder weather is here in the Great Smoky Mountains the Great Smoky Mountains National Park service has announced its winter operating schedule. Although the GSMNP is open everyday and year round some secondary roads, campgrounds, and some facilities do close in the winter.  Operating hours for some visitor services will be cut back  for the winter season. The visitor centers Sugarlands in Gatlinburg, TN and Oconaluftee in Cherokee, NC will be open daily from 8 a.m. until 5:30 p.m. through December 1.  Cades Cove Visitor Center located  near the half way point on Cades Cove Loop Road will be open daily…
